What are the challenges of growing up with Celiac Disease?

What are the challenges of growing up with Celiac disease and the social injustices that accompanied it? Celiac disease is an autoimmune reaction to gluten. However, there is limited education and awareness on the disease. I grew up being outcasted, questioned, and isolated because of my inability to eat gluten. As a child there weren't that many safe food options for me. Grocery shopping was burdensome because gluten free products are not only more expensive but also smaller in portion sizes. This is why I want to use my artwork to spread awareness and enact change within the community.

I experimented and failed with many different methods to convey my disparate eating. I experimented with transfers, the darkroom, silver gelatin prints, paint, polaroid's, Adobe Photoshop, studio lighting and different types of image manipulation. Through peer review and revisions, I learned that I incorporated utensils and eating in most of my images but not the isolation or physical ailments after consuming gluten. This spurred me to create more emotional images with some taking the appearance of crime scenes to convey the seriousness of my food allergy and others being childhood photos.
